Christmas Traditions

We finally have a video of Samantha on the internet! Check it out here. I apologize for the cruddy quality of the video, my camera is ancient and makes a weird clicking noise when it records videos. Samamtha was enjoying the jingle bells we picked up from Blain's, and I thought you might like to see it. Surprisingly she only tried to eat them once!
So I've been spending some time recently thinking about what kinds of Christmas traditions we want our family to be brought up with.
Since Chris and I have been married we have gone to our local Christmas Tree farm and cut down a live tree for our living room. This is something we both enjoy, and we plan to continue to do.
When I was growing up at home everyone would get a special ornament of their own every year. We are going to add our own twist on that tradition by opening our ornaments every year on St. Nicholas' Day (December 6th) so that we can have them on the tree through the month of December.
On my side of the family we play a game called Traveling Bingo on whatever day we happen to be celebrating Christmas.
On Chris' side of the family we get together on Christmas Eve for dinner and gift exchanging.
One of the things I want to start doing next year is an 'interactive' advent calendar. I always loved the small advent calendars where you had to hunt for the door that corresponded with whatever day you were on, and there was a little piece of milk chocolate shaped like a reindeer or something behind the door. Those were awesome, but not what I have in mine for our advent calendar. I want to make an advent calendar like this one: Advent Calendar Link, and I want to have the pockets filled with activities and special things we can do as a family, like this: Advent Pocket Fillers Link.
Share with me. What are your family traditions around Chrismas time?

  2. She's always cute - pics or video - can't screw that up! Your traditions, both sides, sound nice :) On my side we didn't have any real traditions - the food was more the tradition with press cookies & cranberry breads. My mom always bought me the Hallmark 'Daughter' ornament, which this year they stopped making. Tony's family did the Christmas Eve dinner/gift exchange. Our tiny family of 3 has no traditions at this point. I'd love to make some but can't think of anything I find perfect enough to commit every Christmas to. Tony doesn't really care about any specific traditions so we're pretty lame. Maybe we'll join you & piggy back whatever you do...unless it includes me having to make that advent wall thing...then we're out of luck!
